The foundation's purpose is to promote understanding of past themes and events by placing them in a current, relevant, and forward-looking context - with the conviction that there is no future without history and a vibrant culture of remembrance should be cultivated in Switzerland and internationally. The foundation promotes scientific, yet generally comprehensible, engagement with transformative developments in the fields of art, culture, society, and current events, as well as active knowledge transfer - with the aim of illuminating connections from different perspectives and translating them into forward-looking insights. The foundation does not focus on processing political events per se, although these may be relevant in context. In principle, study and project results should be documented and published. The foundation can contribute to projects, but primarily aims to initiate its own, intergenerational measures and support scientists and students who are committed to the foundation's purpose. Furthermore, the foundation can provide spaces in its properties for educational and representational purposes. The maintenance, administration, and all other costs, as well as all employees for its properties, can be taken over and paid by the foundation. The foundation has a non-profit character. It does not pursue commercial or self-help purposes and does not strive for profit. The foundation is established for an indefinite period.
