According to the Statistics on the Structure of Enterprises (STATENT) of the Federal Statistical Office, there are around 619,000 market-economy enterprises in Switzerland (survey year 2022). They employ roughly 5.3 million people across more than 700,000 workplaces.

NOGA (Nomenclature Générale des Activités économiques) is the official Swiss classification of economic activities. It is maintained by the Federal Statistical Office and is based on the European NACE classification. The current NOGA 2008 version divides the economy into 21 sections, 88 divisions, 272 groups and 615 classes. ranq follows this classification and groups it into easily discoverable top-level categories.

99.7% of all Swiss companies are SMEs with fewer than 250 employees. Of these, around 90% are micro-enterprises with fewer than 10 employees. Only about 0.3% of all companies count as large enterprises — yet they employ roughly a third of the total workforce.

The leader is the canton of Zürich with over 110,000 companies, followed by Bern, Vaud and Aargau. Relative to population, the canton of Zug leads with the highest company density per inhabitant.

Around 50,000 new companies are entered in the commercial register in Switzerland each year. At the same time, roughly 25,000 to 30,000 companies disappear annually through liquidation, bankruptcy or restructuring — leaving a net increase of about 20,000 companies per year.
