The foundation's purpose is to support members of the armed forces and civil defense living in the canton of Bern, in cases where state and private benefits are insufficient or not granted, when they have fallen ill or been injured while performing their military duties or participating in extracurricular military and sports events; when they have become destitute or are at risk of becoming destitute due to circumstances beyond their control, either as a result of their military service or for civilian reasons; when there are statutory barriers or gaps in their professional reintegration between or after longer periods of service; to support spouses and direct descendants of members of the armed forces and civil defense living in the canton of Bern, in cases where state and private benefits are insufficient or not granted, when they have become destitute or are at risk of becoming destitute due to circumstances beyond their control; when the member of the armed forces or civil defense has died in the line of duty or during extracurricular military and sports events; to make annual contributions to the social services of the armed forces for the benefit of members of the armed forces living in the canton of Bern, as decided by the foundation's board; to support activities of institutions, associations, organizations, groups, and individuals based in the canton of Bern that serve the purpose of military preparedness and promote the will to defend; other activities may be supported if they have a connection to the Bernese military system. National organizations with similar goals to the Bernese Winkelried and Laupen Foundation may be supported if they have a connection to the Bernese military system. The foundation is non-profit and does not pursue any commercial purpose.
