The foundation's purpose is to ensure in Switzerland and abroad the economic, social and environmental development of populations (in particular those excluded from technological progress), the respect of individual and public freedoms, and the respect of the sovereignty of individuals, groups, companies and states by providing, free of charge and freely, technologies, protocols, infrastructures, smart contracts and/or applications based on Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) and governing the issuance and peer-to-peer transfer of digital assets. In order to achieve its ideal purpose, the foundation ensures the acquisition, development, deployment, governance and maintenance of DLT technologies, in particular protocols, networks, assets, and the necessary equipment for their proper functioning. It may hold the exclusive ownership of intellectual property rights related to the protocols, technologies, software, and applications it develops and may make financial investments. Furthermore, it may interact with various actors (private, public, or non-profit) through scientific, technical, commercial and non-commercial means to ensure its purpose. Finally, the foundation aims to ensure a so-called 'trusted' Internet, mainly through the public Blockchain ArchEthic (although other DLTs may be added in the future), and to ensure, on the one hand, a transition of governance from its founders to the benefit of the entire community using the associated decentralized network(s) by the means it considers most adequate, and, on the other hand, the sustainability of the related ecosystem. It may carry out any operation directly or indirectly related to its purpose.
