The foundation pursues the following purposes: to promote knowledge about the seas and oceans in the fields of oceanography, marine biology, marine technology, shipbuilding, seamanship, and other maritime sciences; to enable disadvantaged young people, through education, training, and life skills, to fully exploit their potential and become self-sufficient; to promote maritime education, training, safety, and protection; to support the well-being of needy, sick, or injured seafarers; to support research for the development of sustainable ecological agriculture and forestry; to support relief measures for maritime nations affected by natural disasters. The foundation council can set priorities for the pursuit of these purposes and freely decide on the allocation of the foundation's funds to the various sub-purposes. The foundation is non-profit and does not pursue any commercial purpose. The foundation can be active both in Switzerland and abroad. However, more than half of the beneficiaries who receive grants from the foundation in the respective business year must be tax-exempt organizations with their seat and main activity in Switzerland. The foundation is authorized, within the framework of its purpose, to establish further foundations in Switzerland with a similar purpose and to pursue joint projects with Swiss or foreign institutions with similar purposes. It is also authorized to found other legal entities in Switzerland or abroad and to acquire and hold participations in other domestic and foreign legal entities, to the extent that this serves the fulfillment of its purpose.
