Entitled to seek or receive support are primarily and exclusively descendants of the common ancestor of the founders, the late Mr. Joh. Jacob Merian-Wieland, i.e. only descendants of sons, whether male or female, single or married (i.e. daughters of direct male descendants bearing the name Merian), and finally widows of such descendants, as long as they remain in widowhood. In the event of the extinction of the male descendants of the first line, the direct male descendants of Mr. Onophrion Merian (the Second), born 1566, shall take their place. The same rights shall be enjoyed by descendants on the female side of those entitled in the first line, who, with the approval of the competent authorities, adopt and bear the name Merian. If these second-line beneficiaries were also to die out, the direct male descendants of Mr. Walter Merian-Falkner, born 1558, shall be entitled to support, provided they still bear the name Merian. Support shall be granted to such family members as described above, who prove to be in need, either in the form of annual recurring contributions or contributions for a specific purpose, e.g. for the decent education of children, university studies, etc. If none of the first-line beneficiaries prove to be in need of support, or if the support granted to them does not reach 4/5 of the annual interest income, the Commission is authorized, with the approval of the family meeting, to grant support to other persons bearing the name Merian and belonging to the second or third line and in need of support; however, these contributions shall never exceed two-fifths of the annual interest amount. The Commission is authorized to withdraw support entirely or partially from those who have been supported if they prove unworthy of help through their way of life.
