According to the founders' intention, the foundation aims to promote young, particularly talented graduates of Swiss universities in the fields of mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, deposit science, geophysics of the solid earth and their technical applications. There are two funding opportunities: a) The awarding of scholarships to deepen scientific education for independent research work, as preparation for an academic career or practical-scientific activity; applications must be supported by two scientific recommendations; b) The awarding of the Paul Niggli Medal and the associated awarding of recognition prizes to young, no more than 35-year-old Swiss scientists or graduates of Swiss universities who have received their doctorate within the last 6 years and have achieved an outstanding achievement in one of the mentioned research areas. Detailed criteria are set out in a regulation. The medal is presented at the annual meetings of the Swiss Academy of Natural Sciences. The foundation operates throughout Switzerland within the scope of its purpose. The foundation has no commercial purpose and does not strive for profit.
