The purpose of WAN-IFRA is to fulfill the objectives mentioned in the preamble through suitable activities. The goal of WAN-IFRA is to support newspapers and the entire newspaper industry, as well as their technical suppliers and service providers. This includes, in particular, the following tasks: a) defending and promoting press freedom and the economic independence of newspapers, which is an essential prerequisite for this, b) promoting the fundamental role of newspapers and the entire newspaper industry for society and the building and preservation of democracy, c) improving journalistic quality and promoting ethical journalism, d) providing the industry with specialist knowledge and research results in the areas of publication strategy, editing, advertising/marketing, technology, production, and distribution, e) serving as a global center for industry-relevant research and application, as well as a platform for the exchange of ideas, information, and experiences between all stakeholders in the newspaper industry, f) supporting international cooperation to promote the culture of newspaper reading through the establishment and implementation of programs in the area of young readers and newspapers in schools, g) providing newspaper industry leaders with the opportunity to exchange ideas and information around newspaper publishing, h) representing newspapers and the newspaper industry in all international discussions on media topics, i) promoting the free distribution of press products worldwide and the development of a fair and efficient trade in press products.
