The foundation's purpose is to provide financial assistance to the following groups of needy individuals, either directly or through organizations and projects that primarily operate in the canton of Zurich, and exceptionally in the rest of Switzerland: young people and families, particularly in mountainous regions, to improve their living conditions, education, and vocational training; elderly and disabled people. The foundation primarily supports renovation and new construction projects for social housing, where the Birkenhof Foundation's contribution can trigger or significantly contribute to the realization of such a project. The foundation also supports tax-exempt organizations/institutions based in Switzerland and non-profit projects (also internationally) that are committed to animal welfare. The focus is on activities to protect endangered species and prevent/ combat animal cruelty.
