The purpose of the foundation is to secure the foundation's assets for the benefit of the common descendants of Mr. Eduard Burckhardt and Mrs. Henriette née Merian, as well as their widows. The descendants mentioned above, as well as their widows, are entitled to the foundation in the following manner: In the first, second, and third generations, if not all applications can be approved, priority shall be given to those applicants who belong to the generation closest to the founder and, among them, to those who still bear the name Burckhardt. In the fourth and subsequent generations, the entitlement to the foundation shall initially be limited to the descendants bearing the name Burckhardt and their widows; only after their complete extinction shall the descendants who do not bear the name Burckhardt and their widows be entitled to the foundation. The foundation's income and, if necessary, also the capital shall be used to support those entitled to the foundation whose financial circumstances, in cases of illness and unemployment or to cover education and training costs and marriage expenses, make assistance necessary or at least highly desirable.
