The foundation aims to promote basic and clinical research as well as further education in all aspects of patient health, with a special interest in liver and gastrointestinal diseases. It supports research and development teams in these areas, operated or funded by the Swiss Federal Institutes and/or cantonal universities. Clinical studies can also be supported. No industrial research or self-help is intended, and no economic purposes are pursued. The foundation can also support projects from third parties in these areas in Switzerland and abroad, establish and/or participate in legal entities, and/or enter into collaborations, provided that the regulatory requirements of the supporting universities and the foundation's purpose are maintained. It can acquire and hold rights or real estate, to the extent necessary within the framework of the non-profit activity and to the extent that these and/or their yields serve the non-profit foundation purpose exclusively. The activity must be of a subordinate nature. The foundation has a non-profit character, is not profit-driven, does not pursue religious or party-political goals, and has no commercial or self-help purpose. Consequently, the foundation should not engage in activities to influence public opinion or legislation and should not participate in campaigns, neither by political parties nor by or against candidates for public office.
