The purpose of the foundation is to promote research and teaching on Afghanistan and the geographically or culturally adjacent areas, with particular consideration of the region's nature, culture, and history, while maintaining political and religious neutrality. This is achieved through the preparation and dissemination of knowledge by: organizing and conducting lectures and presentations, courses and seminars, exhibitions, and other events; publishing a series of writings with contributions on the above-mentioned topics; making accessible the literature on Afghanistan through the compilation and publication of a bibliography and reviews of new publications; collaborating with institutions and experts from home and abroad; providing bibliographic, tourist, alpine, and general information to spark the interest of a wider audience. A special concern of the foundation is to contribute to the preservation of Afghan culture. To fulfill its purpose, the foundation may maintain an archive with: literature on Afghanistan, publications from Afghanistan, manuscripts and recordings, maps, plans, posters, drawings, photographs, films, etc.
