The most important in brief

Membraloop contains ultrafiltration with C-MEM technology. The water passes through hollow fibers with micropores of 20.1 nm, while bacteria, viruses and solid particles are kept outside. It is especially suitable for remote, off-grid, or crisis-affected deployments, not for normal household use.

What we repeatedly notice in practice: many people expect a complex multi-stage system for water treatment. With Membraloop the core is clearer and more compact, because filtration happens in a single membrane stage. Exactly this makes the solution interesting for mobile and decentralized scenarios where space, power and maintenance are scarce.

What technology is used in Membraloop’s water filter?

The technology is ultrafiltration in membrane bundles, housed in the Membraloop. Specifically, the system uses drinking-water-grade HDPE hollow fibers with an average pore size of 20.1 nm. The water is not allowed through because it would pass the particles, but because the membrane is so fine that solid constituents, bacteria and viruses are retained on the outside.

How does the filtration proceed step by step?

  1. Raw water from tanks, rivers, lakes, springs, rainwater or greywater is fed into the filter.
  2. The water flows through the hollow fibers of the membrane bundles.
  3. Bacteria, viruses and solid particles stay on the outside of the fibers.
  4. The cleaned water enters the inside of the hollow fibers and is available there as drinking water.
  5. If needed, an activated carbon stage can be added after, when dissolved substances like chlorine should be reduced.

The C-MEM technology replaces coagulation, sedimentation and sand filtration in a single step. This is not just because it sounds modern, but because it means fewer process steps and therefore fewer dependencies in application. Especially in mobile or decentralized systems, this reduction is often the real advantage.

For which deployments is the technology suitable, and where not?

Membraloop is particularly suitable for remote villages, expeditions, disaster areas, campsites and other situations without reliable power supply. It also fits central or decentralized treatment of river, lake, spring and rainwater. Not relevant for normal households, and if UV, activated carbon and prefilter stages already exist, use only makes sense if these stages should be replaced.

What the technology does not reduce

Dissolved substances like chlorine are not removed by this membrane. For that, an activated carbon filtration is ideally required. Those who think of Membraloop as a complete solution for everything overestimate its role.

What does this mean for UV systems and cloudy water?

Contrary to the assumption that a UV system alone solves everything, pre-filtration is often the decisive part. With high turbidity UV reaches its limits because disinfection in water is not as effective. This is where the membrane stage in Membraloop is strong, because it pre-clears the water so that downstream UV systems can work effectively.

In our projects, it repeatedly shows: the greatest strength is not a single numerical value, but the robustness of the overall system. Customers are especially impressed by the flexibility, universal applicability, long service life and competent advice. This is often more important for operators than a purely theoretical technical comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How does Membraloop differ from a classic pre-filter?
A pre-filter retains coarse particles, the C-MEM technology works much finer and targets microorganisms and very small solids. This can replace several classic process steps in one step. This is especially relevant where the system must stay compact and energy-efficient.
Is Membraloop alone sufficient if the water tastes of chlorine?
No, the membrane stage is not meant for that. Dissolved substances like chlorine are ideally treated with activated carbon. If you want to reduce taste or certain dissolved substances, you need an additional stage.
Can the technology also be useful for rainwater or spring water?
Yes, that is precisely what it is designed for. Membraloop can treat river, lake, spring, and rainwater, as long as the installation and water quality suit the system. For heavily contaminated or unusual raw waters, the sizing should be checked on a case-by-case basis.
Is the system also sensible if UV, activated carbon and prefilters are already present?
Only if existing filter stages should be replaced or redesigned. If the existing chain already works cleanly, Membraloop adds little value as a parallel module. Its use is more advantageous as a system decision rather than a single component.

For everyday classification, a simple rule helps: Membraloop is not a household solution but a technical answer to mobile, decentralized and critical supply situations. Those who need clean drinking water without reliable infrastructure get a compact and robust stage with C-MEM ultrafiltration. Those mainly looking to reduce taste substances or dissolved chemicals need supplementary processes.

If you want to evaluate the technology for a specific project, it pays to delineate by water source, turbidity, existing stages and desired final water. Exactly there, the decision is made whether Membraloop is the right base or whether another combination would be more sensible.
