The essentials at a glance

A felling is necessary when a tree is weakened, damaged, or no longer safely controllable at its location. In tight spaces, a special tree felling is often required because a normal felling is not safely possible due to buildings, access, cables, or limited space. In advance, the site, risk, approvals, and the right timing must be clarified, especially with regard to breeding season and protected animals.

What we repeatedly notice in practice: the critical point is rarely just the trunk condition. Almost always the interaction of tree, surroundings, and time window matters, for example rot, crown weight, façade, access, and protection status.

When must trees be felled?

At Fällag AG, the assessment does not begin with the saw, but with the question of whether the tree can still stand safely. In the Wädenswil example, the tree was weakened, the trunk rotten, and right next to a building, with tight access and little room to maneuver. In such a situation it’s not about routine, but about a clean risk assessment.

Acting early for us does not automatically mean sawing early. It means assessing early, clarifying, and planning, and then executing cleanly at the right moment.

What approvals does a tree felling require?

The approval situation varies by municipality, protection status, and location. For private tree owners, administrations, municipalities, or maintenance depots it means: do not assume a standard solution, but have local requirements checked. An issued felling permit does not remove species protection.

  • Check breeding season and possible protection provisions in advance
  • Consider protected animals and habitats
  • Clarify municipal requirements and site conditions
  • Only after that determine the right time for execution

Contrary to common belief, approval is not the last step, but often only part of the clarification. Only when legal and ecological aspects fit together can the work be scheduled neatly.

How does a safe felling proceed?

From our experience, safety hinges on preparation. In the field at Fällag AG in Wädenswil, access, safe staging areas, ground conditions, and surroundings were checked first. Then the tree was gradually dismantled piece by piece rather than felled in a single operation.

FactorWhy it matters
Tree conditionRot, breakage risk, and stability determine the safe approach.
Crown weightHeavy or uneven crowns change the load and the procedure.
Buildings and utilitiesProximity to façades or infrastructure reduces clearance.
Space conditionsNarrow access and lack of staging space often favor a specialized felling method.
What determines the suitable felling method

What mistakes lead to problems in tree felling?

In our view, the most common mistake is not the chainsaw but delaying action. Waiting too long shifts a planned job into a higher-risk state. It is also problematic to assess approvals and site clarifications only when the tree has already become critical.

  • React too late to rot, deadwood, or lean
  • Clarify approvals only shortly before execution
  • Do not adapt the felling method to buildings, cables, and space
  • Relying on a normal felling in tight conditions

When is a specialized feller needed instead of DIY?

As soon as proximity to buildings, little space, unsafe access, or weakened trunk come together, DIY is not a good idea. It requires experience, planning, and the right equipment. At Fällag AG this is clearly a case for specialized felling work, not a makeshift solution in the garden or on the site.

We regularly see in projects that external complexity is underappreciated. What looks like a normal tree job to laypeople is often a logistics and safety project with clear procedures.

What role does timing play?

Deciding early does not automatically mean felling early. Before execution, breeding season, protected animals, and the right appointment must be clarified. This order prevents a planned felling from becoming an unnecessary emergency.

Frequently asked questions

Can a tree also be felled if the permit already exists?
Yes, but the permit is not automatically authorization to start immediately. If breeding season, protected animals, or other site requirements arise, the schedule can still be moved. The legal and ecological review must therefore always be considered together.
How do I know if a normal felling is not enough?
Commonly, tight access, little space to lay, proximity to façades or cables, and a weakened trunk. When several of these factors come together, a controlled specialized felling is usually the safe solution. The tree is often dismantled in sections rather than felled in one piece.
How much lead time should I plan for a tree felling?
Depends on location, protection status, and access. Those who check in advance can coordinate approvals, scheduling, and technology cleanly. Those who plan too late risk time pressure when the situation is most delicate.
Is felling during breeding season generally prohibited?
Not fundamentally, but it should not proceed automatically. If birds are breeding or protected animals are affected, a clean clarification is required first. Local protection takes precedence over a fast work date.

For private owners as well as municipalities and administrations, the same conclusion applies: the more precisely the tree, location, and conditions are assessed beforehand, the safer the execution. At Fällag AG, this preparatory work is the difference between a controlled specialized felling and avoidable risk.

If you are considering a tree felling or specialized felling in the Zurich region and neighboring cantons, it pays to obtain on-site professional assessment first. This can clarify whether felling is actually necessary, which requirements apply, and which method is safe in the specific case.
