The overarching purpose of the foundation is to provide regular scientific assessments of the global information environment to policymakers, industry, and civil society in Switzerland and abroad, by organizing, evaluating, promoting, and coordinating research with the general goal of improving the global information environment. The foundation is authorized to give instructions to other groups or sub-foundations to fulfill these tasks. In particular, the foundation aims to: a) Conduct research and policy analysis: monitoring trends in the information environment, including artificial intelligence, quantum computing, algorithmic systems, and other aspects of innovation in information technology and digitalized society, setting ethical standards, identifying emerging key issues, and providing innovative new insights into the causes, effects, and solutions of threats to the global information environment that hinder human progress; b) Provide technical assistance: reviewing policies, program evaluations, and technical advice to strengthen the capacity of stakeholders to cope with the complexity of the global information environment; c) Foster consensus-building, exchange, and sharing of best practices and experiences between governments, technology companies, and civil society groups to promote a healthy information environment worldwide; and other purposes related to the use and misuse of the global information environment. The foundation does not pursue any commercial or self-help purposes. The foundation fulfills its tasks independently, without regard to any particular society, organization, or instruction. It is denominationally and politically neutral.
