First things first

In mechanical engineering, the pre-decision often happens long before the actual purchasing. Whoever enters the specification at the right moment has the best chance to be included in the next machine generation. The later price discussion usually changes nothing about this early decision.

I am currently working on this window as part of a project. For me, one thing becomes clear: what matters is not who follows up the loudest, but who reads the customer's development timing correctly.

Why the Window of Opportunity in mechanical engineering opens so early

When a manufacturer specifies its next machine generation, it determines which suppliers and components will be included. If your component is in the drawing, it often remains through the entire series. If it is not included, many calls usually don’t help.

So, selling happens at design-in, not first in purchasing. Purchasing later only negotiates the price of a decision that has already been made.

How Chancental Works derives the window from data

We calculated this in a running project with boostpilot.ai. The basis was 388 existing customers and 9,682 order lines. This yielded 56 customers with a dated window that is currently open, and 48 of them had not been seen in the company before.

From my experience, this is exactly the practical lever: the order history reveals when a part last went into serial production for a customer. From this, you can derive the development rhythm, and from that the next window. Roughly, it lies six months before to three months after. Additionally, you can usually recognize patterns with the help of AI. Many signals in the market help, which can be researched. From order patterns to tenders, patents and plant construction to trade show appearances: 25 signals indicate movement, with lead times between 9 and 48 months before series start. Red means call this week. Orange: in the four-week plan. No signal: cadence depends on class.

What you should not rely on

Where history provides nothing, we simply state in our report: no window derivable. It looks ugly in the report, but is more honest than a pretty number. This honesty protects against wrong priorities in sales.

Why CRM often searches in the wrong place

Most contacts in the CRM come from the ordering process. Who orders leaves an order, invoice or complaint. Who specifies often leaves no clean trail, even though these people are crucial for design-in.

This is not a criticism of purchasing. They can exclude you, and that is already power enough. They usually cannot bring you back in, because the real lever is set earlier in design and development management.

Therefore, another sorting helps: not by hierarchy, but by buying topic. For a dosing unit, a different person is often relevant than for the control system. In many houses, the answer is not in the system but in the heads of two or three people, and they retire at some point.

What the economy changes for the approach

The VDMA reported real plus 2 percent in July, domestic minus 3. At the same time, chief economist Gernandt says Germany still invests far too little. In such an environment, diligence alone is the most expensive of all responses, because it burns energy at the wrong end.

That is exactly why a precise look at the Window of Opportunity in mechanical engineering is worthwhile. Whoever recognizes the right project window speaks to the right person and invests time where there is still a chance for the next generation.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell if a window is open for a customer at all?
A reliable hint is the order history, especially when a part has already gone into serial production for that customer. Additionally, tenders, patents, plant construction and trade show appearances help, because they can confirm or refute the development rhythm. If these signals are missing, there can also be a clear 'no window derivable' in Chancental Works' logic.
Why is purchasing not enough as the contact person?
Because purchasing usually enters later when the drawing is already established. Then they negotiate the price, but no longer influence who will be included in the next machine generation. For design-in, typically construction and development management are closer to the decision.
What do I do if my CRM only contains purchasing and ordering data?
Then you are very likely missing exactly the view of the people who technically specify the component. The more sensible sorting is not by hierarchy but by buying topic, for example by assembly, dosing unit or control. This helps you identify who is truly relevant technically.
Is this approach only useful for certain industries?
No, but the recurrence varies greatly by industry. The text mentions semiconductors, batteries and dosing technology with a window every one to six years, while pharma, lab automation and materials testing are more seven to fifteen years. This mostly changes the patience and cadence of your approach.

The Window of Opportunity in mechanical engineering is not gut feeling, but an early specification window. Those who recognize it speak not too late and not at the wrong place, but where the next generation is still formable.

Chancental Works considers not only individual contacts but the entire buying topic, the history, and the concrete phase in the customer project. Exactly there lies the difference between chance and predictable market conquest.
