The purpose of the foundation is to support the graduates of Jewish Studies at the University of Lucerne, mentioned in section 1.4, who have demonstrated their scientifically based understanding of Judaism and the Christianity inherently linked to it through diligent study and a diploma, licentiate or doctoral thesis, so that they can eventually take up a teaching position on Judaism at the level of universities, secondary schools or adult education. The candidates receive scholarships from the Otto Herz Study Foundation to further their education in Judaism/Jewish Studies. The further education is to take place in Israel and normally extend over an academic year (from September/October to June/July). The scholarship recipients are expected to write part of a research paper (dissertation, habilitation, special investigation) in Israel and deepen their knowledge of the language, history and mentality of the Jewish people and their religion.
